PA in the WSJ

This is a list of articles regarding Pennsylvania in this week's Wall Street Journal. Chances are I missed something, but these are the articles that caught my eye.

It should be noted that I routinely do not read the editorials in the WSJ. So any discussions of the state, its elected officials, businesses, or citizens, in editorials will not be mentioned here.

PA Politicians

Curt Weldon is mentioned in “Lobbyist pleads guilty to destroying evidence,” (7/28)

Sen. Arlen Specter called the FDA “a joke” in “Grassley, Dingley lead calls for overhauling FDA,” by Alicia Mundy (7/30)

PA Businesses

Comcast rates a few mentions. “FCC to rule Comcast can’t block web videos,” by Amy Schatz (7/28) and “FCC reprimand of Comcast looms,” by Fawn Johnson (8/01)

Grundy Worldwide, an insurance company specializing in vintage and classic, is based in Horsham, as noted in “Putting a premium on classic cars,” by M. P. McQueen (7/30)

Brief mentions: Mothers Work of Philadelphia (7/29)
Mace Security International of Horsham (8/01)

Other PA

Philadelphia is on of three cities to have seen a Nike billboard that was soon declared insensitive and withdrawn. See “Nike withdraws ‘Dunk’ ads blogs slammed as insensitive,” by Nicholas Casey (7/28)

In “majority of jobless in U.S. don’t get benefits,” by Anton Troianovski (7/29) we learn that 61% of those eligible for unemployment receive it. The national average is 37%.

Philadelphia is backing away from the “pay as you throw” trash system, as noted in “Kicking the cans,” by Robert Tomsho (7/29)

This week’s requisite Mark Zandi quote is in “Amid housing slump, glut eases slightly,” by James R. Hagerty (/719). Philadelphia is included on a chart accompanying the article. Housing is not so bad but the job market is listed as “very weak.”

The possible tolling of I-80 is mentioned in “Bush calls for new highway tolls, more private funding of roads,” by Christopher Conkey (7/30)

“Ivy Leaguers’ big edge: starting pay,” by Sarah E. Needleman (7/31) includes a quote from David Wise of Philadelphia’s Hay Group, Inc., and from Peter Cappelli of the Wharton School, as well a mention of Penn in a chart accompanying the article.

Pittsburgh financial-aid expert Mark Kantrowitz is quoted in “House presses colleges to rein in costs,” Anne Marie Chaker (8/01)

Other Interesting Tidbits

There were a few things that stood out on my first go round but when it came time to type them up they weren't quite so interesting.
